Well, it's been some time since I've posted here. It's take a bit of discipline for me to keep up with my blog but I'm trying!

Easter is a time of rebirth and new beginnings and something new at Clovis Hills is the idea of Staff Blogs. The idea is to give the people of our church a way to know the staff better and discover what we're really passionate about. My Staff Blog is called Engage the World. I am privileged to serve alongside many faithful servants of Jesus on the Clovis Hills Missions Team. Every year we get to witness lives changing as we serve in a mission and our hope is that more will join us this year! This year our theme is Go Local. Go Global. Just Go. It's our intention to provide many different opportunities throughout the year for individuals, families and growth groups to serve on mission.

What's Right With The World

On November 24th & 25th the weekend after Thanksgiving Clovis Hills began the new series of "What’s Right with the World". Often times in our culture we find ourselves focusing on what's wrong in and with the world. Well, Clovis Hills wants to focus on the positive and speak about the good stuff God is doing! Thus, I was privileged to speak with Pastor Steve on Compassion: The Glory of God Revealed through Missions. Seeing and participating with God through acts of compassion such as missions and specifically most recent the "Miracles of Christmas". In fact, as a result over 900 people were ministered to in the name of Jesus through the people of Clovis Hills. Praise God!

Another aspect of the weekend was the honor of hosting the Children of the World. This is an amazing ministry of children from around the world who travel to open our eyes to the struggles of orphans from their homeland. Here are just a few video clips of the children in concert.

Overseas Missionary Care

Going Global can mean many things to different people. Clovis Hills wants to encourage people to pray along with their family and/or Growth group about where God wants them to GO.

Some next steps...

Praying for people from another country or unreached people group (UPG).
Developing relationships with people of a different culture than your own.
Intentionally preparing for an overseas mission trip by getting your passport.
Preparing for a mission trip in the next 2-3 years by creating a savings account over and above your tithe and specifically set aside for wherever God would send you.
Adopt an Overseas Missionary and support them with prayer and small gifts throughout the year.

Developing an ongoing relationship with a missionary who is serving cross culturally overseas can be one of the most amazing ways to serve the Kingdom. This past Sunday, we celebrated what Clovis Hills is doing in the world through missions. We have an exciting follow up to Lynette Goodwin, who has just returned from a mission in India! A self proclaimed "scaredy-cat," Lynette Goodwin serves on the missions team as a volunteer Missions Ministry Director and strives to help Clovis Hills be on mission. Lynette's story was recently published in the International Mission Board's recent eNewsletter. Take a couple moments to read it at: Lynette's Story.

When you hear or see the word "missions" - what comes to mind? Sleeping in a mud hut? Traveling to Zimbabwe? Stepping way out of your comfort zone? Well certainly all the above could apply but are definitely NOT the rule. I believe when it comes to missions that God wants each one of us to take the next step in the journey of discipleship. One step at a time with Jesus. Another person who has taken the "next step" is Danny Johnson who recently served on mission in Swaziland, Africa. Fresno Rescue Mission * Maroa Home

Clovis Hills has been hosting a Christmas Party at the Fresno Rescue Mission for the residents of the Emergency Family Shelter for several years and this year is no different!

A ministry of compassion…
The number of families requiring emergency shelter, not just in Fresno but in the greater Fresno County area, continues to increase. Families who have lost their home due to fire, loss of job, economic conditions or other life crises need a safe haven where they can find the resources and assistance they need to get on with their life.The Emergency Family Shelter offers 14 to 30 day temporary shelter for families, including food, clothing, personal care, referrals to other agencies that can assist them, and most importantly love and hope through the teachings of Jesus Christ. Families are given food packages and other needed supplies when they leave the shelter, to assist them in starting over in an apartment.
It is the only emergency shelter in the greater Fresno area that accepts whole family units, including father, mother and children.

The Christmas party is just one way to begin sharing the love of Jesus...pray about joining us!

The Maroa Home is a Christian discipleship program located in The Tower District of Fresno, CA. The Maroa Home has been in operation since 1984. All of the men in the program are committed to changing their lives and helping others in the process. The Maroa Home has been restoring families for over 21 years and continues to this day with great success. This Christ-centered residential program offers structure, discipline, counsel, biblical instruction and life skills training to drug and alcohol addicted men in an extended family atmosphere.

Clovis Hills is serving at the Maroa Home this christmas by purchasing requested items as Christmas gifts for resident. Another way to serve is to give Christmas gifts for a family of a resident of the Maroa Home. Share the compassion of Jesus by serving the men of the Maroa Home.

Angel Tree * Willow Creek Health Center

Angel Tree is a program of Prison Fellowship and a ministry of the local church. Angel Tree seeks to transform the lives of the children of prisoners, their incarcerated parents, and their families and to reconcile them to their heavenly Father and each other.

At Christmas, Angel Tree provides a specific opportunity to connect with families and begin to minister to them. People from Clovis Hills purchase and provide gifts to the children of inmates in their parent's name. With each gift delivery comes the opportunity to share the love and hope of Christ. The cost of Angel Tree Christmas is minimal, approximately $40 per child reached. Each child is to receive a minimum of two gifts. When we send you the children's names we will include a suggestion for one fun gift and one article of clothing that the prisoner picked out using our gift guide. When you contact the children's caregivers, you should get their approval of the prisoner's gift suggestions and find out if they have anything more specific to add to the request. Each gift must be new and valued at $15-20.

WILLOW CREEK HEALTH CARE CENTER

Many elderly people live in nursing homes, assisted care facilities and extended care centers for the remainder of their lives. Some are fortunate to have family and friends visit them regularly. However, many suffer through loneliness and no one around to visit them. Hence the mission of ministry of Clovis Hills at the Willow Creek Center. Folks from Clovis Hills visit residents at Willow Creek Health Center and participate in a Worship Service. This happens every month and there are various ways to serve. All elements of a typical worship service are available such as music, singing, teaching the message and fellowship. Prayerfully consider serving the elderly in our community by sharing the love of Jesus.

Alamos Neighborhood * International Students

Clovis Hills served the Alamos Neighborhood during "Three Wishes for Clovis" in the Fall of 2006. This Thanksgiving we would like to continue the community involvement in a neighborhood by giving food baskets. Since Three Wishes, we've continued to stay involved in the neighborhood by participating in two block parties sponsored by the Clovis Police Department. Let's continue the relationships we've started by serving this Thanksgiving.

International Students is an opportunity to provide a unique holiday experience by hosting a Christmas or New Years party and invite international students from Fresno State University! Did you know that students from around the world come to the valley to further their education and many spend 2-4 years in the U.S. without ever stepping foot in an American home? The "ends of the earth" are here so practice your gift of hospitality and befriend an international student.

Juvenile Hall Christmas Party * Samaritan Women

Juvenile Hall Christmas Party is a ministry which offers an evening of Christ-centered fun for youth incarcerated at the Juvenile facility. This is done in partnership with the Mid-Valley Southern Baptist Association every year. It offers the opportunity to serve the youth by ministering to them during the holiday season. Consider being used by God by joining this mission on December 4, 2007. Several ways to participate are:

Prepare gift boxes
Prepare food
Come out and share the evening by singing, playing games, and hanging out.

Samaritan Women empowers women who have expressed a desire to break the cycle of crime in their lives and to make choices that will help them fulfill God's purpose for them in their families and communities. One way Clovis Hills is ministering to the women this Christmas is by sponsoring a woman to the Clovis Hills Women's Christmas Luncheon. Consider sponsoring a woman by serving them in this way.

Operation Christmas Child * Feeding Fresno

Operation Christmas Child is a wonderful way to share God's love with a needy child in a third world country. Many, if not all, of the children have never heard the good news of Jesus Christ and the hope that can be found in a relationship with him. Through this mission Clovis Hills has the opportunity to serve as a growth group community which will impact children overseas. Now, if your growth group has chosen Operation Christmas Child then the next step is to...

Begin by picking up a shoebox (or use any standard size shoebox) and an Operation Christmas Child brochure from the SERVE table located in the courtyard during weekend
services or go to Samaritan's Purse for details.
The brochure will give you the information you need to prepare a shoebox.
Filled shoe boxes need to be returned to the Clovis Hills Community Church SERVE table no later than Sunday, November 11. If you miss this deadline then between Nov. 11 - 18, please take the shoe boxes directly to Baseball Greats Sports Cards, 442 Pollasky Ave. in downtown Clovis: Mon. - Sat. 10 am - 6 pm and Sun. 12 pm to 5 pm.

Then expect God to do miracles in the lives of your growth group as you "go global"!

Feeding Fresno is another way for growth groups to serve in our local community. Feeding Fresno reaches out to churches, families, and organizations in a concerted effort to put food on the tables of economically disadvantaged individuals. Over 100,000 bags of groceries are given every year! If you can sort food, stock supplies or greet folks with a smile then THIS may be your local mission.

Miracles Of Christmas

Clovis Hills is currently going through the series called Miracles of Jesus. It's an awesome look into the miracles performed by Jesus...many opportunities to explore the Scriptures in a growth group and learn more about God and the saving grace that can only be found in Jesus.

Today, the opportunity to serve as a growth group on mission began with the Miracles of Christmas! Through the churchwide study of Miracles of Jesus many people will begin to realize modern day miracles of God throughout this study. Thus the vision is to begin praying about where God would have your growth group serve. The Missions Team at Clovis Hills has put together many ways to serve. It is our hope and prayer that as a growth group you will seek God's plan for the mission that He intends for your growth group to participate in. Then sign up and expect to experience God as he performs miracles in and through you on mission!

Vacation...God's Gift

I try to blog every week...mostly on Sundays when I get a moment. Blogging does not come naturally to me however, I'm beginning to appreciate the value in sharing some of my thoughts.

Well, I did not write anything last week because I was on vacation! Woo, hoo! It was a great time of relaxing, regeneration and just plain catching up on stuff around the house. I'm so busy most days that I don't spend a lot of time shopping for personal stuff much less household stuff. Then there is the car maintenance stuff that usually has to be squeezed into my crazy schedule and I get more stressed by it all. So, I decided that this vacation was to be a low key experience and I ended up catching up on a lot of "maintenance" in my life.

My last vacation I ended spending a lot of time dealing with some of my dad's needs - he has Alzheimer's and is living in a facility for now. So, needless to say that one was not very restful...in fact, I couldn't wait to get back to work! Certainly, I'm still dealing with dad stuff but I intentionally decided to focus on some time for me amidst everything else. It worked! I did get some "me" time and returned to work this past week rested and renewed...God is good! I also was able to travel for the weekend to the Grand Canyon with my old friend that I've known since the 3rd grade...we go wwwwway back! It was a great time with an old friend exploring an incredible creation of God. Awesome!

Lead: Going Global

Leadership is essential in the church. God has called all of us to lead in some capacity. The good news is you only need to be one step ahead to be a leader. So, I encourage you to:

Maximize your serve.
Become a leader.

Who me?!? Become a leader?!? Yes, YOU! Pastor Steve shares with us today as he completes the current series with LEAD - the last of the four areas of discipleship.

Jesus gave the church a mission to complete. The only way the church will complete the mission is to build a solid foundation of godly leadership. Leading as a disciple of Jesus reflects the value of Joyful Authenticity: Living from the heart. To lead our lives in such a way as to reflect the image of Jesus through our ability to live with joy even amidst adversity reflects a value of Clovis Hills.

In Acts 1:8 Jesus said:

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Clovis Hills is a part of a global plan to care for people who face the difficulties of spiritual emptiness, egocentric leadership, extreme poverty, pandemic disease and crippling illiteracy. We do this in conjunction with local churches worldwide. The first step is to become a "witness" of Jesus. Being a witness of Jesus is simply sharing what God has done in your life by sharing with others or through acts of compassion.

Now, as it applies to missions the vision is Going Global which is going on an international mission with your growth group. As a leader of your growth group you have an awesome opportunity to help lead your growth group on an international missionary journey. So, in your growth group begin praying about where God wants your group to travel on mission somewhere around the world. Then watch and experience God at work through your growth groups willingness to take the next step! It's an incredible experience with God!

Serve: My Community

Serving is more than volunteering. It's investing in eternal things, making an impact in people’s lives and serving from a grateful heart. SERVE is the third of four areas of discipleship being discussed in the current series. An amazing thing happens when you get connected to God through serving in an area that uses the gifts and talents that God has equipped you with...then add passion - watch out world...God is at work! It is truly awesome to encounter God through serving...try it - you won't regret it!

Serving as a disciple of Jesus reflects two of our values at Clovis Hills. One is Grateful Service: A generous heart and the other is Open Acceptance: A heart for the lost. To serve in a ministry of the church AND to be part of a growth group on mission is the way to reflect the values of Clovis Hills. I appreciate and agree with Rick Warren when he states that there are really two essential parts of serving: ministry - service to believers and mission - service to unbelievers. The important balance to maintain is to find where God wants you to serve in ministry and mission. Not sure where to begin? Pray and think about the following outline as you discover your place of service:

Submit to God’s service
Experience God’s blessings
Reflect God’s son
Validate God’s calling
Expand God’s kingdom

Jesus stated in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19, 20:

"…Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Making disciples begins at home, in our church and in our community. Now, as it applies to missions the vision is My Community which is serving on mission in our local community with my growth group. So, in your growth group begin praying about where God wants your group to serve on mission in our local community. Then watch and experience God at work through your obedience!

Grow: My Life Mission

Pastor Steve's message today continues with GROW - the next area of discipleship. It is a strong teaching about what it really means to live the christian life. I highly recommend it!

Growing to be a disciple of Jesus reflects two of our values at Clovis Hills. One is Devotion: A heart for God and his word and the other is Healthy Relationships: A heart of humility. To attend weekend services AND to be part of a growth group is the way to reflect the values of Clovis Hills.

Now, as it applies to missions the vision is to realize and own My Life Mission which is recognizing the need to be on mission and being part of a growth group. This is the beginning point of being on mission for Jesus...it's as vital as traveling overseas on a mission trip. In fact, it is foundational to building the character of Jesus.

So, if you are not in a growth group...my encouragement to you is to take the leap and trust God to grow you in ways you've never imagined.

Connect: God's Mission

Today, Pastor Steve's sermon was about connect which is one of four areas we've identified as essential for the Christian life. The others are grow, serve and lead which will be discussed over the next three Sundays...you won't want to miss it!

Connecting to God is the most important thing we can do...especially to accept Jesus and "connect" with him in our heart. It's God's mission to reach out to every lost soul and to bring them to himself. That's where we get to participate. The Holy Spirit lives in each one of us that have accepted Jesus and we get to be God's hands and feet in the world. This past July Pastor Dave MacNeill shared during the "Heroes" series on Ordinary People, Supernatural Power - it was pretty amazing...worth listening to again. In fact, I intend to use the sermon for mission trip preparation in the future. How cool is that?!?

There is no greater mission than to help people connect to the living God...it's a great responsibility, honor and privilege to participate with God. Have you connected to God? Are you connecting at Clovis Hills? Don't wait any longer to connect to the experience of your lifetime...ready, set, go!

To The Ends Of The Earth

Missions is something that many people discuss and often disagree about. When debating how it should be done, my advice is simple…“just do it"! I am prone to action so sometimes I get a little impatient with some folks but the truth is WE all can be on mission in our Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth - just by being who God designed us to be...imperfections and all!

If you are a follower of Jesus and commit to being his disciple then part of that calling is to be a missionary. Now, being a missionary does not necessarily mean traveling to Zimbabwe however, I highly encourage going overseas sometime in your life. What it does mean is realizing the opportunity to share Jesus wherever you are - home, family, friends, work, school - WHEREVER God places you today, be His witness.

Will you accept the invitation to share what Jesus has done in your life? Really, that is what evangelism is...simply sharing about your experience and only you know your story. Once you've accepted and are willing to take your story "on the road" then you've taken the step to be on mission.

My Life Mission * My Community * Going Global

It is the vision of the Missions team at Clovis Hills to help people take the "next step" in sharing Jesus with those that don't know him, have never accepted him or are on this life journey striving to be a faithful disciple of Jesus. My Life Mission - recognizing the need to be on mission and part of a growth group.
My Community - serving on mission in our local community with my growth group.
Going Global - going on an international mission with my growth group.

So, where are you in this plan? Ask God to direct you and trust him to provide all you need to be obedient to his calling.

What Can I Do In Mexico For 3 Days??

You can be part of building a home for a needy family in Mexico! You may be wondering how is that possible? Well, through AMOR Ministries...it is very possible.

Clovis Hills has partnered with AMOR for the last 6 years in Mexico and it has been amazing to see what God does in and through each one of us. This trip is very doable especially because AMOR lays the foundation before we even arrive. When we do arrive we begin framing, preparing for windows and a door and finally finish up with the roof. AMOR provides camping equipments, tools, and food...we just need to be in San Diego by 7:00 am ready to serve.

Attention Nurses and Doctors!

It is the vision of Clovis Hills to mobilize growth groups on mission. It is my passion over the next year to spend time with Clovis Hills' Growth Groups and share a few of the many opportunities that will entertain the vision and process. I look forward to spending time mobilizing the Lord’s church to action.

That being said, I have an amazing opportunity and have become aware of an urgent need for medical personnel to travel to China this fall. To be more specific, the dates are for October 15th-31st of 2007. I personally partnered with this organization on a medical mission in the fall of 2006 and it was awesome! I was very impressed as they did a great job on the training, logistics and overall coordination of the trip.

If you are or know of an RN and/or MD who would prayerfully consider this adventure - this is for you!

Some details...

The mission is humanitarian in nature by providing basic medical care to Villagers.
October 15-31, 2007.
Deadline to sign up to go is JULY 31st.
PRAY, think about your growth group supporting you, get a passport, attend the informational meetings, required immunizations.

Sweet Spot

What image comes to mind when you think of the phrase "sweet spot"? I know that in tennis there is a "sweet spot" on the racquet. In softball...the bat has a "sweet spot". As we do life...the term is used in reference to an experience that is "sweet"! All this talk of sweet is making me think of ice cream which of course, is SWEET! Anyway, I'm typing the word so much that I'm beginning to question the spelling! Have you ever done that?? Ok, enough distractions...back to the discussion...

Lately, I've been reflecting on my own "sweet spot" in ministry. It's been a challenging time as I juggle work, family, school and attempting to maintain a healthy personal & social life. On the family front, my dad has alzheimers and is now going to live with me, my mom, sister and niece...I have a house full! It's a very stressful time and one that I was not entirely prepared for but nonetheless have to deal with...when you think of it you can pray for me and my family. The school situation is a place where I am stimulated and energized...I love learning new stuff! I am pursuing a Master's degree in Intercultural Missions at the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary in Fresno...I'm now just 20 units towards completing my degree! My work is the full-time ministry that I get to do both in missions and singles.

This week I've been "knee deep" in serving through World Changers. So you can see...there is not much time for reflection. However, I've encountered my "sweet spot" in ministry this week. As I've been out and about visiting the 23 sites being worked on, interacting with the homewners, sharing a meal with the crews, hanging out with the students...I've "tasted" the "sweet fruit" of Jesus. It's been very cool. It's like a gift from God during a very stressful time in my life...it's like He is giving me a glimpse of heaven. Thus, I am reminded of all the missions projects & trips that I've been on...I always seem to get a glimpse of what heaven must be like...and it is "SWEET"!

My hope is that you also will experience the "sweet spot" of ministry in wherever you serve the Kingdom.

I’ve never visited Africa, but hope to have the opportunity one day. When I think of Africa I think of poverty, hunger, disease such as AIDS...sure it saddens me but mostly it humbles me in that I am healthy and certainly not hungry! :-) Then I think of my friend Mica who has graciously agreed to serve for 2 years...and she has been there almost 6 months now...how time flies! She is an amazing young woman of God who hopes to be used by God in a BIG way in Africa and all over the world. Clovis Hills has an incredible opportunity to participate with her in making an impact in Africa...very cool!

Horn of Africa Mission known as HOAM is a ministry that is directly involved in ministering to the African people by planting churches, leadership development, education and health clinics. Clovis Hills is financially supporting the ministry and we look forward to forming an intentional partnership that mobilizes many to travel to Africa...awesome!

Another way for us to get involved is to learn more about what's going on in the world. Kay & Rick Warren of Saddleback church are taking action when it comes to fighting AIDS all over the world and especially in Africa. A student at Saddleback created a video entitled 8000 a day/everyday...check it out...it will make you think.

World Changers

Serving on mission in our community is an awesome way to experience God in our backyard. Often times in our busy lives it's hard to imagine how we can find the time to serve God on mission. Certainly, this is a constant challenge for all of us but with God it is possible. One way for us to serve in our community is through World Changers this summer!

Saturday, June 23rd – Saturday, June 30th
18 homes in the Clovis area will be repaired, painted, roof work, fence replacement, and more!
Churches can participate in this project by “adopting” a crew for the week!

“Adopt-a-Crew”

Host them on Sunday, June 24th by leading them to your church for service. After church, provide lunch, encouragement, prayer and then take them to meet their “homeowner” for the week.
Throughout the week Monday, June 25th – Friday, June 29th provide lunch at their worksite for about 15-20 students and adults.
Attend the Celebration event on Friday evening, June 29th to glorify God!

Going Global...Samaria & to the ends of the earth

Cross-cultural ministry can occur in our backyard and across the sea...anywhere we have the opportunity to step outside our comfort zone and exprerience God in a culture other than our own. It is my hope that more and more people begin to experience God "on mission" with their families and small group. There are many opportunities to explore cross-cultural encounters in our community. Pray as a Small Group and ask God where he wants your group to go. Then create a savings plan to help it all happen. Decide where you will go and begin preparing. There are many options to choose from:

Encounter Jesus

Easter is approaching thus it becomes a time to reflect on Jesus and what he did for us on the cross. The fact that he willingly submitted himself to suffering death on the cross...for me is beyond comprehension. Jesus chose to be obedient to God so that we could have the opportunity to know God. That's an amazing fact...one we should prayerfully reflect on from time to time -especially now! Clovis Hills is having several services this weekend to celebrate Easter - we are anticipating many visitors this weekend...it's an exciting time!

Normally during this week, I am in Mexico serving on mission through Amor Ministries. This has been our Family Mission for the last 6 years. This year we did not go...not yet anyway. So, in previous years during this week, I'm swinging a hammer, sweating, getting dirty for Jesus and serving the poor instead I'm home writing on my blog! Although, I'm still focusing on Jesus and serving him in other ways, it is my hope that people prayerfully consider going to Mexico sometime this year. All you have to do is pray, decide when you and your family or small group could go and sign up!

Being on mission is one of the most incredible ways to encounter Jesus...I highly encourage it! Are you ready to enounter Jesus?

St. Patrick...The Missionary

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Did you know that St. Patrick was a missionary from Britain? Although he is often referred to as the "Irish Saint", he was neither Catholic nor Irish! I read a story a few years ago on the Urbana website that enlightened me about this great missionary. St. Patrick had an incredible impact by leading many in Ireland to a faith in Jesus Christ. He used the simple three-leafed shamrock to illustrate to the king the nature of the Blessed Trinity - Three Persons in One God. Pretty creative dude, don't you think?!?

Another creative venue is Christian radio. What is interesting to me is that according to KLOVE radio there are no Christian radio stations in Ireland. KLOVE is promoting the Ireland project that plans on establishing the first Christian radio station...awesome!

Spiritual Renewal

I went to a Small Groups Conference at Saddleback a few weeks ago and was able to hear Rick Warren speak on renewal. He was scheduled to speak on P.E.A.C.E. but not unusual for Rick...he veered from the schedule and spoke from his heart. Since the audience was made up of pastors, church leaders and small group leaders...he spoke to us! It really was powerful what he had to share so much so that we from Clovis Hills felt that the Spirit was speaking through him...what a concept. Anyway, I will attempt to summarize so as to offer you an opportunity to do some self-reflection with regards to your role in the ministry. As for me, it emphasized and reminded me of the importance of some simple steps that have a direct impact on the ministry.

As I understand the steps to renewal are:

Personal Renewal - Ask yourself: What is the condition and health of my personal relationship with God?
Relational Renewal - Ask yourself: Do I have any fractured relationships with family, friends or coworkers that need mending?
Missional Renewal - Ask yourself: What is my purpose in this world and am I striving to fulfill that calling?
Structual Renewal - Ask yourself: What structures and/or programs am I involved with to accomplish the work of the Kingdom?
Cultural Renewal - Ask yourself: Am I a part of the cultural change that is needed for the expansion of the Kingdom of God?

My understanding is that we are to review each of these areas and proceed accordingly once an area is "renewed". In other words, if my personal relationship is not solid or lacking in any way, shape or form then I must work on that first before proceeding to the next step. Now, in reality, we will regularly have to evaluate our lives because we are on a journey with Jesus and hopefully we are growing and changing. Therefore, if we find that an area needs some renewal...we are to look at the previous areas as well and adjust accordingly. These are my words, not Rick's...it's just my take on the message but it makes sense...don't you think?? Anyway, I hope I've given you something to think about and I welcome your feedback!

God's Mission

God often uses ordinary people to do the extraordinary for his glory. His mission is to restore broken relationships. He longs to hang out with each one of us...and especially those that don't yet know him. He wants his children to join him in the mission of reconciliation...and that means us! Clovis Hills is intentional about sharing the love of Jesus to everyone. We have a value of Open Acceptance: A Heart for the Lost...welcoming people just where they are...and helping them take the next steps as they strive to become more like Jesus. God doesn't expect perfect people...just people with a heart's desire to love him and strive to model such a lifestyle.

Living such a life means to be intentional about serving God on his mission...to share the love of Jesus...across the street and across the sea. I know that for some people the thought of this can feel somewhat overwhelming...thank God he's with us on the journey! Fortunately, we also have another "tool" and that's Saddleback church. They have been working on a Missions strategy for the last couple of years called P.E.A.C.E. - we have been part of working through some of preliminary steps. Rick Warren has often said "It is time...for the church to be the church." The P.E.A.C.E. plan is a strategy that will help Clovis Hills to continue being a church with an intentional purpose of fullfilling the Great Commission. This is an exciting time in the life of our church...yeah God!

Therefore, it is my desire to see Clovis Hills on mission primarily through their Small Group. This is not to suggest that individuals should not serve alone but I do know that we are better together...so we will encourage to choose a mission together. God's Leadership

I got my DVD in the mail! You may be wondering...what DVD?!? Glad you asked.

Last Fall, I had the opportunity to see the movie Facing The Giants. It was awesome! The acting was fair to good and it was low budget but the story was great! The movie is about faith in God that transcends our human understanding. The emphasis on leadership is very powerful. So powerful that I was ready to join the coaches' team! The truth is I am on the team for God and the thing I'm realizing lately is that I am passionate about leadership. I love to help someone get a glimpse of what God has purposed them to be and do...and then serve in the ministry of their choice.

I have had the privilege of coming along side many leaders serving on mission. The experience has afforded me countless opportunities to grow in my own faith and leadership ability. There have been times when I've been on the sidelines watching a new leader emerge, testing their own ability, trusting God to guide them and then bearing fruit....such sweet fruit! It's soooo exciting - I'm about to burst!!! :-) This is really when I know what my passion is and that is to continue to train, equip and empower leaders for the Kingdom...it doesn't get any better than that!

Where Will God Have Me Go In My Lifetime?

International missions is one area that for most folks seems to be the hardest to embrace. Whether it's because of the cost financially, fear of crossing cultures, anxiety about eating "weird" food...have you tasted some of the food we eat?!? C'mon...deep fried twinkies!!! Yuck! Well, I have to admit, I have not "embraced" a deep fried twinkie...and I don't plan on it either. And that's not really the point I'm trying to make. The truth is that we have some pretty weird customs and traditions right here in Clovis California and so to limit ourselves by fear of the unknown is really a loss for us and what God can do through each one of us.

So, ask yourself the question: Where will God have me go in my lifetime?

Prayerfully seek His voice and listen to His "still small voice"
Learn what you can about world missions
Go to the various websites, google a country, pray for an unreached people group
Get a passport
Just get started

The International Mission Board is the missions organization that we often partner with when traveling overseas. They have recently put together a podcast which can be a great way to learn about all they are doing and thus some of the many opportunities before us!

Hmmm, where in the world is God sending me?!? I need to go hang out with Him...until next time...peace!

Hangin' Out With God

Last Friday I spent some time with God during my "Solitude Day". I thoroughly enjoyed hangin' out with God, reading the Word, chilling and talking with him, singing and basically spending time contemplating about what he had to say. I love slowing down to read God's word and hear his still small voice...I'm not always clear about what he tells me but I usually am inspired by the Spirit.

Something I usually do during my daily quiet time is read My Daily Bread to get me started. The title of Friday's devotion was "Forgetting God". Basically it was about going through the day and forgetting about God. I have to admit that I all too often get caught up in the busyness of life and lose sight of God's hand in my life. Seems strange since I'm in ministry but it's the truth. Even though I'm busy about doing my Father's business...or so I tell myself, I forget to recognize His hand in it all! I thank God that he is patient with me! :-)

My Solitude Day is a welcome break for my busy life. It's like a drink of cold water on a hot day in the desert! Wait a minute, I don't think I've ever been in a desert-especially on a hot day! :-) Oh well, you get the picture...during my solitude time, God quenches my spirit when I need it most. This is what my Solitude Day has become and thus it's a high priority in my schedule. I encourage you to schedule a Solitude Day soon!

Solitude

It's been a crazy busy week! Thank God I get to spend some time with Him on Friday! I have a goal of spending a day with God once a month. It's planned and scheduled in my calendar and the only way it can change is if I move it within the week before or the week after...and so far that has worked about 90% of the time. Now...this does not mean that I'm able to spend the whole day with Him but it is a goal. Sometimes it takes me a couple of hours to settle down and avoid any distractions...this can be tough since I think I may have a little "A.D.D." and then when I do spend time...I set goals...but last time...like I said..."A.D.D."! Anyway...I'll share in next weeks blog about my solitude time with God. Until then...peace!

A New Year...A New Day

Last year I tried hard to have an "attitude of gratitude" towards life and everyday stuff. It's funny because I set that goal before exepriencing the toughest year of ministry thus far! God's funny...isn't he?!? As I look back on the year, I am realizing that in fact, it probably was the most fruitful as far as people experiencing God "on mission" which is pretty cool! So I have to wonder, was God just pruning me this last year...hmmm, I don't know for sure but I do know that He wants me to be more like Jesus everyday. So I will continue to remind myself this year to keep hold of that "attitude of gratitude" in everything...realizing that it's all for and about God. In that, I can rest assured that His will is first and foremost. I look forward to what 2007 holds for me!

Mica Mirides

Happy New Year! Hope your holidays were great! I had a chance to share God's blessings with my family this past Christmas in a very practical way. I felt it was and continues to be my "personal missions"...I believe some in my family got a glimpse of who God is...and that's pretty cool! Yeah God!

Missions continues to be a passion of mine and so when someone in our church goes global...I get pretty excited. Well, for the first time ever in our churchs' history we have one of own embarking upon a 2 year journey to Africa. Mica Mirides has been attending Clovis Hills since she was 9 years old and now as a 22 year old - she has accepted the call of God to serve in Africa. Anyone who knows Mica, knows she is wise beyond her years and in fact, she has a long-term vision of the ministry for Africa. As a teacher and a lover of children...it is her desire to minister to orphans and widows. I look forward to sending many short-term teams to join her and serve in Africa. Mica will be commissioned on Sunday, January7th during both services at Clovis Hills. Hope you can join us!

Personal Mission

Christmas is a great time to share Jesus with family and friends...especially those that have already accepted him as their Lord! Some would think it's all about sharing with those that don't know Jesus and certainly this is true. However, I find that often times we take our family for granted and that includes the church family because after all, they'll always be there for us. Hopefully, they will always be there for us but wouldn't it be great if they saw a new side to our personality?? Such as giving gifts they don't even expect. Or, sharing with them some of our precious time. You know, hanging out with them without expecting anything back from them...kind of like Jesus did. Just think about what could happen in our relationships with our family and friends if we lived like Jesus.

Remember, people are always watching us...you might even be "sharing" Jesus to someone who doesn't know him by loving our own family and friends...unconditionally. This is what I call - Personal Missions. So what is your personal mission? Pray and ask God to reveal to you your personal mission then try something new this year with your family and friends...and watch God work!

Christmas Missions

Clovis Hills serves on mission through various Christmas projects. I've written about the Juvenile Hall Christmas party already so wanted to also tell about some of the other Christmas missions. I'm pretty new at this "blogging" stuff...so bear with me! Anyway, enjoy the update!

Operation Christmas Child - 175 boxes donated in October! Then for the first time folks from Clovis Hills went to the LA area and spent a Saturday sorting boxes at the west cost distribution center! This project was completely run by a small group.

Refugee Home Visits - 10 youth and adults went to visit a family of 12. They learned a lot about the Hmong culture and had some way cool rice according to Greg Goodwin! This is an incredible opportunity to create relational bridges for the future.

Maroa Home - A Clovis Hills small group has adopted this as their Christmas mission! They give each man a shoe box filled with toiletries, socks and goodies - 34 in all. Then each of the men that get to go home for the Christmas receive a gift for their family members…all purchased and wrapped by Clovis Hills folks.

Angel Tree - 200 angles were chosen to receive gifts! These were delivered by the team of volunteers on Saturday, December 16th. Along with the gifts each family received an invitation to Clovis Hills outreach services and Christmas Eve services.

Fresno Rescue Mission - Christmas party will be happening this Thursday, December 21st and lots of goodies and gifts for the families who are spending Christmas at the missions' Family Shelter. If you would like to participate then email michelle@pellerin.com soon!

Okay, this has probably been a long post...but lots going on! I am very excited to see what God's doing in the life of our folks and what he has done - not to mention how he will continue to use those willing to step outside their comfort zone!

Thanksgiving In India??

Have you ever thought of spending the Thanksgiving holiday by serving people in India? Since it is an American holiday one doesn't usually think of celebrating it on mission. However, think of this: Jesus spent his life being thankful to the Father by serving people thus modeling for us the example of grateful service. It the desire of Clovis Hills to help our members experience God fully through service. Missions is a vehicle for service that takes us outside our comfort zones thus allowing the Spirit of God to work in and through us. What an incredible opportunity!

We have in our midst a couple of folks who have just experienced Thanksgiving in India. They have some incredible stories to share with us. '>View video.

Juvenile Hall Christmas Party

I participated in the Juvenile Hall Christmas Party last night and it was AWESOME! Clovis Hills has been a part of this mission since we began as a church. The Mid-Valley Southern Baptist Association has hosted this mission for many years now and as a result over 300 people from the central valley will participate this year!

Marcela, Missions Coordinator, facilitated and orgainzed our party. We had about 17 of our folks serve by playing games, providing food, reading story, sharing the gospel and basically just hanging out with these teens who are living in Juvenile Hall. I was priveledged to share the story of Jesus birth and crucifixion. I felt it necessary to highlight the two criminals being crucified alongside Jesus. It seemed relevant. It seemed an opportune time to help these guys realize God's love when they choose to accept Jesus. In fact, they too can hang out with him in heaven if they so choose. 20 young teenagers accepted Jesus last night! Woo, hoo!

Christians "On Mission"

What does it really mean to be On Mission? An "On Mission" Christian simply means someone who is fully committed to Jesus Christ and his purposes by living a such a life. In other words, "walking the talk" so as to share the good news of Jesus thus helping people understand that it is a gift freely given for ALL to accept when they so choose.
Therefore, it is a goal to offer missions opportunities that foster relationships of unconditional love which lead to a committment to Jesus Christ.

"On Mission" happenings:
Dec. 4th, we will be hosting a Christmas Party for teenage guys in Juvenile Hall.
Dec. 9th, building relationships with refugee families by giving them gifts.
Dec. 16th, delivering gifts to children through the Angel Tree project.
Dec. 21st, hosting a Christmas Party for the Family Shelter at the Fresno Rescue Mission.
